HomeFor Residents
Residents of the City of Merced play a key role in limiting or preventing the introduction of illicit items like Fats, Oils & Greases and trash into the sewer conveyance system. All drains from sinks, showers, baths, and even toilets lead through the pipes in your homes, through the sewer conveyance system, and all the way to the City of Merced Wastewater Treatment Plant.
If every household within the city limits participated in performing the Best Management Practices listed below our city could be a clean and safe environment for everyone:
- Only flush the 3 Ps: Poop, Pee & Paper (toilet paper)
- Throw all other items into a trash can.
- After cooking foods the create fats, oils & greases you can pour the FOG into a metal can or glass jar, let it cool, bag it up, then toss it into your regular trash. Remember "Can it, Cool it, Bag it, Trash it."
- Any remaining residue on the pans can be dry wiped with a paper towel and tossed into the garbage.
- After eating, food scraps can be tossed into your food waste bin.
- Large quantity used cooking oil containers, like oils used for deep frying, shall be disposed at a local waste oil disposal facility or landfill. These do not go into your trash can.
- No hazardous chemical should ever be poured down the drains or toilets. Small doses of cleaning chemicals are acceptable.
