Casey Wilson Appointed as Permanent Fire Chief for City of Merced
MERCED, Calif. — July 31, 2025— Merced City Manager Scott McBride has announced the appointment of Casey Wilson as the permanent Fire Chief of the Merced Fire Department.
Wilson, who has been serving as Interim Fire Chief since 2024, brings more than 22 years of fire service experience and a strong record of leadership, operational excellence, and community engagement to his new role.
"Casey has demonstrated exceptional leadership as Interim Chief, and his proven ability to manage complex operations, budgets, and community partnerships makes him the ideal choice to lead the Merced Fire Department into the future," said City Manager, Scott McBride. "We are confident his vision and expertise will continue to strengthen our fire services and enhance public safety for the residents of Merced."
Extensive Leadership & Experience
Wilson began his fire service career in 2003 and has steadily progressed (advanced) through the ranks, taking on increasingly significant leadership roles. Since 2019, he has served as a chief officer and has held every rank within the Merced Fire Department.
Department Enhancements Under His Leadership
Under his leadership, the City officially upgraded Engine 53 to Advanced Life Support (ALS) status, ensuring 24/7 paramedic staffing and enabling the department to deliver a higher level of care during emergencies.
Wilson also oversaw the addition of two Type One Engines and the launch of Squad 53 marking the first time the Merced Fire Department has introduced an additional frontline response unit in 65 years. These advancements, along with other equipment and staffing enhancements, have significantly improved the department’s emergency response capabilities and overall readiness.
Over his career, Wilson has managed department-wide budgets, policy development, and grant acquisition at the executive level. He has also earned a reputation for building strong relationships with city officials, regional agencies, and community leaders, ensuring coordinated and effective emergency response.

Wilson officially steps into the role of permanent Fire Chief effective Thursday, July 31, 2025. His annual salary is $187,722.00.
