FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Merced, Calif, [March 25, 2026] - The City of Merced has received official notification from the U.S. Department of Transportation that Contour Airlines has been selected to provide Essential Air Service (EAS) at Merced Regional Airport for a four-year term beginning July 1, 2026.
The Essential Air Service program helps ensure that small and rural communities maintain access to commercial air travel through federal support.
“This is a major milestone for Merced and the future of our airport,” said Mayor Matthew Serratto. “Securing reliable commercial air service strengthens our local economy, supports business growth, and improves connectivity for our residents.”
Contour Airlines will offer non-stop service from Merced to Los Angeles (LAX) and Las Vegas (LAS), providing convenient access to major travel and business destinations. Flights will be operated using 30-seat regional jet aircraft, offering an efficient and comfortable travel experience.
Ticket sales are expected to begin on April 14, 2026, with additional details regarding schedules and flight frequency to be announced.
"Contour Airlines is honored to be selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to serve the City of Merced," said Ben Munson, President of Contour Airlines. "We are confident our regional jet service, low fares, and non-stop service to both Los Angeles and Las Vegas will materially expand air travel opportunities for the community."
In preparation for the launch of service, the City continues to advance several key components necessary for airport operations. These include Transportation Security Administration (TSA) tenant improvements, finalization of airline lease agreements, and overall operational readiness for the new Merced Regional Airport terminal.
Airport Manager Rhett Williams will present a comprehensive update at an upcoming City Council meeting, outlining the EAS award, project status, and next steps required for the airport’s opening.
The City of Merced will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
